As one of the few people in the world working solely in symbolic modelling using clean language I care a great deal about the scientific footing of the field. George Lakoff's work does a great deal to stabalise the notion of metaphor as the most fundamental and complete mechanism available to us for representing experience. Of course Gregory Bateson as far back as 1972 put down some key thinking around metaphor - notably that salience in metaphor was found in the relationships not the refferents. Clean Language is easy to veryify as a means of eliciting and exploring metaphor landscapes and the power that this has to work directly with anothers experience is well known. If you will forgive the plug - the curious may like to know that the Clean Change company are running a phone based Clean Language training for the first time this October (Phone Training)
